Trainer Spotlight: Joe Cannon

Personal Trainer Spotlight: Joe Cannon

Area Servicing: Servicing the state of Pennsylvania.

Experience: Joe has received a BS in Chemistry and Biology and a MS in Exercise Science. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) and a personal trainer certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

At Gym Source, we value the expertise of personal trainers. That’s why we regularly spotlight local trainers who have a passion for fitness. This month we are featuring Joe Canon, personal trainer and esteemed fitness author. Joe strives to help his clients “live as long as they possibly can by being as healthy as they possibly can.” With great pride he stated -

“My grandmother was my oldest client. She lived to be 104. I’m very interested in how exercise and eating well can slow down the aging process and even reverse some of aspects if aging.”

Joe’s niche markets are those struggling to overcome medical issues or aging. Generally speaking, the safest way to train that group is with healthy eating habits paired with a circuit-training program he explains.

“Circuit training spreads the exercise stimulus over a variety of muscles which causes the least amount of muscle soreness. Not only does this decrease the risk of injury, but also it’s efficient. Someone already struggling with a medical condition isn’t looking to be in more pain, they are looking for pain management solutions and fitness results.”

In addition to teaching both clients and other trainers about fitness tips and tactics to elongate a healthy life, Joe’s passionate about debunking myths associated with supplements. He’s been educating people about supplements since the 1990s. When asked about supplements he jokes, “just eat a salad if you want to be healthy.”

“But seriously,” he states, “a healthy smoothie and veggies should be the focus. Remember a supplement is meant to supplement already healthy eating habits, not replace them."

After over 30 years in personal training, he has become a big fan of multi joint exercises.

“I like to use the most muscle at the same time. I like leg presses, lat pull downs, things that promote functional fitness. I can get more done with a big muscle group exercise then a little muscle group exercise."

He would be remiss if he did not discuss his interest in rhabdomyolysis (“rhabdo”), a serious medical disorder that can be caused by over-exercising. A condition a former featured trainer personally experience. Esther Choi shares her story of recovery from rhabdomyolysis here.

He’s the author of the book on exercise-induced rhabdomyolysis, a topic he’s even lectured to NASA about. He reminds all his clients that exercise and healthy eating are critical to a long life, but to engage in all fitness related activities in moderation.

Recently, Joe has transitioned away from personal training, and towards training the trainers. He’s conducted over 700 fitness seminars for AAAI/ISMA. Educating trainers and the public about health and wellness through writing and speaking is how he feels he makes the biggest difference in the lives of others.
