The Story Behind TRUE Bike's Walk-Through Design

True Recumbent Bike

TRUE Fitness has been manufacturing premium cardio equipment for over thirty years.  Through the years, TRUE’s equipment has gone through a number of design transformations to enhance the user experience.

In 2006 TRUE’s designers and engineers set out to make a revolutionary new recumbent bike.  Based on the market research, they saw that a large majority of recumbent bike users were geriatric or had mobility issues and noticed the industry’s standard bike design at the time was quite cumbersome, requiring users to climb over and into a machine by raising one leg up to 20” to straddle the height of the center frame structure.  From this insight, the design team started working on a walk-through design that allowed users to enter and exit the recumbent bike without having to climb in.

To get a viable walk-through design, TRUE had to completely change the frame structure.  The frame needed to strong enough frame to withstand the tremendous opposing force created as the user sits on the back seat and pushes the pedals on the front section.  Engineers set out to build a single “beam” powerful enough to withstand the powerful twisting motions of a user pedaling.  This single beam was forged from steel to create the sturdy, walk-through design that we see today on TRUE recumbent bikes.

In 2010, TRUE started brainstorming new enhancements to the walk-through recumbent bike that make the TRUE recumbent bikes what you see in today’s market.  One key discovery by TRUE’s Industrial Designer was that by rearranging the position of the brake mechanism in the front of the bike, we could effectively chop approximately 15" off of the length of the bike. Knowing that floor space in any exercise space is at a premium (whether a commercial setting where smaller footprint equals more equipment in smaller space or at home where people are limited in the amount of space dedicated to fitness equipment).

The footprint was not the only thing that the 2010 redesign had to offer. TRUE also looked at the wear and tear of key points of the bike noticing that upon entry and exit, users were apt to kick the walk-through area and cause scratching over time.  With this in mind, strategically placed rubber molds were added to keep the equipment looking new!

Lastly, TRUE looked to enhance the walk-through design by giving special attention to the comfort and support of the seat back on the TRUE recumbent bikes. The seats were specially designed to delivery orthopedically correct comfort and durability for years to come.

TRUE’s thoughtful and innovative commitment to providing users with quality fitness equipment has made TRUE a leader in the fitness industry. Try a TRUE recumbent bike today and see why these and other great features make TRUE the best choice for your home.
